RHYTHM AROUND US
Patrick also offers a series of workshops through the Québec government's Culture in the Schools Program. The workshop, called Rhythm Around Us, is suitable for all levels of primary and secondary school students and is subsidized by the Ministry of Culture and Communications.
The objective of the workshop is to encourage an awareness of rhythm not only in a musical context but also through an active awareness of the rhythms found in the world around us.
Students are engaged in short listening exercises and discuss various aspects of the rhythmic nature of the world. Students also join in a segment of rhythmic games and vocal exercises drawn from South-Indian and Japanese drumming emphasizing the inner sense of rhythm that everyone possesses. Rhythm in music is introduced through discussion and hands-on explorations of percussion instruments such as various frame-drums and tambourines, shakers and bells, as well as more exotic instruments such as the Japanese taiko.
